SHILLONG: Setting an example of sorts, the District & Sessions Judge, West Khasi Hills sentenced the accused in the attempted rape of a five-year-old girl to 10 years rigorous imprisonment besides fining him Rs 10,000.
The accused identified as Gabriel Kharshandi of Porla village of West Khasi Hills was apprehended by the police in November 2014 on charges of attempting to rape the minor.
In fact, it was the local residents who had supposedly caught the accused ‘red-handed’ before handing him over to the police.
Kharshandi was found guilty of committing the offence under Section 366 of IPC.
The incident had taken place near Porla Presbyterian Church. Ironically, according to sources, Kharshandi, after attending the church service, lured the minor to a secluded place and attempted to rape her.
