SHILLONG: In what can be termed as good news as far as connectivity between Khasi and Garo Hills is concerned, a major part of the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road has been completed.
A drive along the road reveals that apart from the stretch from Upper Shillong to Sohiong, the rest is complete and can be used by commuters to Garo Hills.
Land acquisition, meanwhile, is underway for the incomplete stretch.
Though the newly constructed road is equipped with proper safety signs, too many curves and sharp bends till Shallang makes the journey a touch uncomfortable.
In addition, complete dearth of basic infrastructure like petrol pumps, road side stalls etc., are also a cause of concern at present.
No wonder, despite the road being almost complete, traffic flow is at best thin and commuters still prefer the old route via Assam.
The work along the 264.30 kilometer Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road at an estimated cost of Rs 1494 crore started in February, 2011and the timeline to finish the project was March, 2014.
The road which is scheduled to start from Upper Shillong connects with Jengjal, around 30 kilometers away from Tura.
