SHILLONG:  The Office of the Horticulture Development Officer (HDO), Ginger Development Station, Umsning organized an awareness cum demonstration programme on the use of bio-fertilizers” on Wednesday  for the farmers of CR&D Block Umsning in collaboration with the Rural Development Centre for Organic Farming (RDCF) and Maxgrow Biotech Pvt. Ltd.
The farmers were made aware of the long term loss of soil fertility due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers can upset beneficial microbial ecosystems, increase pests  and contribute to the release of the Greenhouse gases.
Repeated applications may result in a toxic build up of chemicals such as arsenic, cadmium and uranium in the soil.
These toxic chemicals can eventually make their way into fruits and vegetables and causing various death threatening diseases to the human population at large.  A field demonstration was conducted to show the farmers how bio-fertilizers are used for soil fertility and the whole process from seed treatment till the harvesting period at the H.D.O Ginger Organic Farm, Umsning.
