SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited has detected as many as 19 cases of theft of power in the villages of Nongur, Dira and Lumpyllon under Sohiong distribution sub division of East Khasi Hills.
MPDCL Chief Executive Officer, Central Circle informed that during an inspection, 11 cases of theft of energy by hooking and three cases of theft by by-passing the meter were also detected. In addition, three cases of theft of energy by reconnecting the power supply after it was disconnected on account of nonpayment of energy bills were also detected.
According to MPDCL, fine ranging from Rs 30000 to Rs 40080 were imposed on the defaulters and they have been directed to pay the same failing which they will be liable to be punished under section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003 and Amendment Act 2007, which includes a jail term of three years besides fine.
The MPDCL added that such thefts lead not only to huge loss for the Corporation but “overloads the lines and sub stations and their subsequent failures.
Meanwhile, the vigilance staff of MPDCL on Monday also conducted checking in Ranikor, Balat and Mawryngkneng.
