SHILLONG: Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Dinesh Maheshwari, has asserted that the North East has multiple varieties of laws and customs and it is a treat to see lawyers here dealing with the subject with so much of ease.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the national seminar on current challenges before the legal profession and judiciary, Justice Maheshwari said the job of the lawyers is not secondary to the job of the judges.
While asking the new entrants to learn from their seniors, the Chief Justice said a lawyer’s job is a process that has to be learnt from the seniors and all around happenings in the court.
He also said that lawyers have to be fair to their client, the client of the opposition and even the court.
The Chief Justice, meanwhile, stated that he was bowled over by the beauty of Meghalaya, terming the State as ‘mesmerizing’.
“Stay here for a couple of weeks and you will find an excuse not to leave the place,” he said amidst applause.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Law, Rowell Lyngdoh, said the profession of lawyers is the most influential profession in the governance of the country, even as he added that the lawyers are the backbone of the judiciary.
“Both lawyers and judges should work hand in hand to deliver justice to people,” he said.
The two day national seminar is being attended by lawyers from across the country including Supreme Court lawyers and a host of deliberations have been lined up during the two day event.
Among the special attendees was Supreme Court lawyer and Rajya Sabha member Ram Jethmalani.
