Tura: New Lok Sabha member from Tura, Conrad K. Sangma, has expressed his gratitude to the voters of Garo Hills for electing him to Parliament and assured to be their voice in Delhi.
In a press statement released to the media on Sunday, the new Lok Sabha MP said, “The electorate of Tura Parliamentary Constituency have given a resounding mandate – a mandate which echoed beyond the hills and valleys, rivers and streams of our beloved Garo Hills. This victory, however, is not mine alone. It is the victory of the people of Garo Hills, a victory of our time-tested democratic values, and a victory of optimism over pessimism.”
He also said the people of Garo Hills had cast their vote in favour of change – a vote for positive change, a vote for development and progress.
“This election was held when the pall of gloom, which descended upon Garo Hills, Meghalaya and the country on March 4, 2016, was yet to fade away. The passing away of our leader Purno Agitok Sangma was an irreparable loss for each one of us.
But while the tears were yet to wither, you, the voters, have stood by us, and the resounding mandate was a befitting tribute to my late father’s legacy,” said Sangma.
He also termed his family as bedrock of support and his party of workers and leaders of the NPP as extremely dedicated to the cause of Garo Hills.
He did not fail to mention the active support and campaign given by other parties, particularly the BJP, UDP, GNC, KHNAM,HSPDP and others and mentioned in particular Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders Jual Oram and Nalin Kohli.
Congratulating Congress candidate Dikkanchi D. Shira and her campaign team for the hard fought battle, Conrad extended a hand of friendship to his election opponent.
“I solicit her cooperation and support in taking our Garo Hills to newer heights of development and prosperity,” said Conrad and reached out to even those who did not vote for him with the statement, “Even for those who did not vote in my favour, I assure you of my support, and I will be your voice too.”
