Editor,

These days we see a lot of political mongering in the State. Some may put the blame entirely on the recent visit of the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi to the city. It might be true that his visit has added fuel to the BJP fire in the State. However, as far as I know, long before the coming of Mr. Modi, there has been a lot of stuffy air in the Congress government of our State. If rumours are true, there seems to be an anti-incumbency movement within the party. It is evident that many party members are unhappy about the style of Dr Mukul’s leadership. Our CM may have shown some charisma in the beginning of his office but now all that has vanished like dew in the sunshine. There are too many unresolved issues like the VAB, the ILP, the MCCL just to name a few which this government has left pending for years. The promises of development have gone sour in the eyes of the public.

There are too many wishful projects which the CM has in his ambitious mind but unfortunately they just remain empty promises. The recent miserable defeat of his wife in the Tura MP by-election, has added to his woes. That election has revealed another negative aspect of his leadership, namely, an attempt to promote dynastic politics. Are there no other worthy Congress candidates in Garo Hills other than his wife? Dr Mukul’s leadership is weakening day by day and with the BJP growing bolder and stronger, the Congress may soon have to face the inevitable consequence. In my opinion the CM has lost much confidence not merely among his party members but among the public as well. I have heard many citizens expressing their dissatisfaction with the present leadership and the way development has been stalled. It is said that when a leader has lost the confidence of the public it is time for him/her to fade away and make room for another person. If Dr. Mukul is noble enough and cares for the welfare of the Party and of the State, it is time for him now to step down and entrust the leadership to another capable person.

Respect Bangladesh’s sovereignty

Editor,

The negative diplomatic roles played by Pakistan and Turkey in Bangladesh’s internal affairs regarding the recent hanging of a war criminal clearly are not appreciated. Whether execution is solution to any crime is an entirely different issue; but repeated interference in a sovereign nation’s internal affairs is highly condemnable. The repeated failures of these nations in managing their own internal affairs plagued with severe economic crisis, rise of insurgency and serving as a corridor of  drug, arms, insurgents and helpless, illegal migrants deprives them of the right to moralise. One can understand the concern of global bad boy Pakistan, but Turkey’s reaction raised eyebrows across the world. It also demonstrates why Turkey in spite of several futile attempts was never accepted as a member of the European Union. Turkey (as part of the former Ottoman Empire) has been involved in the globally condemned Armenian genocide of 1915; and has never accepted any responsibility, provided any compensation or asked for forgiveness. With their fading influence in the Islamic world and being dejected from joining EU, Turkey is actually confused to find its right place in her troubled neighbourhood.

Yours etc.,
