SHILLONG: After all the delay, enrolment of citizens under the National Population Register (NPR) is finally underway in several parts of the State. Not only this, official sources say that the response from the people to the entire process has been very encouraging.
State Nodal Officer, NPR, PW Ingty admitted that NPR enrolment in some parts of the State has been slow. Ingty added that technical problems with the vendors carrying out the enrolment programme had led to the delay.
“We are trying to make arrangements to rope in some more vendors for early completion of the exercise,” he said.
The NPR enrolment will eventually lead to a compilation of the national register of Indian citizens and is expected to help in identifying genuine non tribal citizens of the State.
It may be mentioned that almost 24 per cent of the total population in East Khasi Hills District has been registered under the NPR.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had stressed on the need to conduct an aggressive campaign on the implementation of the NPR in Meghalaya besides asking the respective district administrations to prepare calendar well in advance to create sensitization among the people about the objectives of NPR.
It is said that NPR will be of great advantage for Meghalaya where there is a concern for illegal immigration and doubtful citizens since the process provides the data of citizens which can be used to categorize people.
