TURA: The new MP from Tura, Conrad K. Sangma, has said that his party would be prepared to challenge the ruling Congress in the upcoming 2018 elections.
“We are prepared to take on the ruling Congress party and I am confident and hopeful that in 2018 NPP will give a tough fight. We are confident of forming the next government,” claimed Conrad during his three day tour of the plain belt region of Garo Hills which culminated on Sunday evening with a big thanksgiving rally at Mahendraganj constituency which is represented by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikkanchi D. Shira.
The Congress lost the Mahendraganj assembly segment to the NPP in the recent by-election for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
Wishing the minority community of Garo Hills on the occasion of the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, Conrad assured that he would work for all communities without differentiating against caste, creed or colour.
The tour of the plain belt region, dominated by the minority community, assumes significance for the NPP given that this was the first time in its history that the voters from that region had overwhelmingly voted for a non-Congress party and candidate in a parliamentary election.
“I shall work for all communities and give a patient hearing and see what can be best done to bring about a solution to the problems,” said the young Tura MP who held meetings at Chibinang, Phulbari, Rajabala, Mahendraganj and Zikzak.
