SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma advocated the need for schools and colleges to look at how the positive energy of the youth can be directed and diversified to provide them sustainable livelihood.
Speaking at the Quasquicentennial Jubilee celebration of KJP Girls’ Higher Secondary School here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said that in a matrilineal society it is only befitting to have such a school to empower women.
Sangma also expressed his happiness to be a part of the celebrations of a premier institution in the State that is exclusively dedicated to the girl child to equip them with knowledge.
The K.J.P. Girls’ Higher Secondary School was established in 1892 by the Welsh Missionary Society with the lone purpose of educating the girl child.
Meanwhile, the chief minister stated that though the State is confronted with many challenges and constraints, it is the endeavor of the government to meet the expectations of the younger generation.
He urged the teachers to give the students the necessary handholding to enable them to make the right career choices. He added that the human development programmes funded by Asian Development Bank will not only upgrade infrastructures but upscale and reinforce the skills of teachers.
Home Minister Roshan Warjri in her address said that the school has been instrumental in the making and evolving of the community through the education of womenfolk. “Though the challenges in the modern world are complex and intricate the sound principles of the school can be emulated to make a difference,” she said.
