TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills has sought the appointment of more teaching staff at the Mendipathar College, one of the oldest colleges in Garo Hills.
According to the GSU, the college which was established way back in 1971 has till date, only 12 sanctioned Lecturers with three in English, one each in Philosophy, Garo and Assamese and two each in History, Economics and Political Science. Due to the absence of more lecturers many aspiring students were losing out on admissions as the college can accommodate only a few.
“This year, altogether 335 students out of which 237 in Class XI and 98 in degree courses have been denied admissions due to shortage of teaching staff,” the union informed.
Stating that one of the oldest colleges in the region had been neglected by the State Government for far too long, the GSU demanded the appointment of more sanctioned lecturers, upgradation of infrastructure, and inclusion of subjects like Geography and Sociology as well as the opening of Science and Commerce streams in the college.
