TURA: The statehood movement spearheaded by Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC), got a boost with the recent support of the political parties in the state.
GHSMC has welcomed the statements of newly elected Tura MP, Conrad K Sangma and UDP’s Jemino Mawthoh both of whom have endorsed the idea of creating a separate state for the Garo people.
The HSPDP legislator Witting Mawsor also stressed the need for the formation of a Khasi state.
“Time and again the people of Garo Hills have shown the referendum with respect to the Garoland movement. In the year 2008 assembly election, (Late) P A Sangma when he was in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) publicly declared the need to start the movement for Garoland state in almost every election campaign. Again in the year 2013 general election, he again promised the people of Garo Hills that he would lead the movement for Garoland if he won the election. The people of Garo Hills extend their support for which he was elected again making history in his political career. This shows that the people of Garo Hills are desperate in creating separate home state,” GHSMC chairman, Nikman Ch marak said.
Reminding that (Late) Hopingstone Lyngdoh of the HSPDP and (Late) Clifford R Marak of GNC had during their time raised the same issue in the House as well as outside, Marak said that the separate state issue was only their manifesto during every election for which people give them their referendum. “Taking the electorate battle with the use of money power of National Political parties, taking advantage of poor econo-mic condition and igno-rance of the people in the state has weakened the separate state movement politically. But this time, the people is aware of the movement thereby getting momentum across the state and we hope to get the people’s referendum in respect to the separate state in the days to come,” Marak added.
