Assam Cong chief Anjan Dutta passes away

Guwahati: The president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), a former minister and legislator,  Anjan Dutta, died on THursday morning at the AIIMS in New Delhi at the age of 64.
Dutta was being treated at AIIMS for more than a month after he had fell seriously ill on return from a  family holiday in South Africa. He had gone on a vacation after leading the party in Assam Assembly  election 2016.
He was suffering from pneumonia and high blood sugar, Congress sources said here.
A three time MLA from Amguri LAC in Assam, Dutta was a cabinet minister during 2001-2006, besides holding several important party positions. He was credited with revival of the sick Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) in the capacity of the state’s transport minister. He leaves behind his wife and three daughters. He was elected from Amguri LAC in 1996, 2001 and 2011.
The mortal remains of Dutta are being brought to Guwahati this evening in a special flight from the national capital. Last respects will be paid to the leader at the state Congress headquarters here in the evening, party sources said here.
Last rites will be performed at his native Sivsagar town tomorrow where a public condolence meet will  be held .
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders of the party paid  their last respects to the Assam Congress chief at AIIMS New Delhi this morning.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal Governor P B Acharya condoled the death of Dutta while all the senior Congress leaders in Assam including former chief minister Tarun Gogoi a condolence meeting held at the state Congress headquarter here on Thursday.
