SHILLONG: The State unit of the Lok Janshakti Party has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the members of the bereaved family and Rs. 2 lakh to every injured person in the night bus accident at Sonapur Mandir on June 14.
In a letter to Modi, the state president of Lok Janshakti Party, Jamil Ahmed urged him to release the ex gratia payment at the earliest.
The JJP president also sought the intervention of Prime Minister for the improvement of the dilapidated road in Meghalaya-Assam border.
The State BJP president, Shibun Lyngdoh, while condoling the death of the passengers demanded that the State government along with the Assam government should take immediate measures to stop further casualties due to road accidents in NH-44 which is the lifeline of several states of the Northeast.
The State BJP president said that he would personally take up the issue with Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari.
29 passengers were killed and nine injured when the ill-fated night bus fell into a deep gorge near Sonapur Mandir.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s West Jaintia Hills Unit also conveyed its condolences to the families of the victims of the bus mishap.
In a statement issued to the press, the party unit urged the authorities concerned to repair the bad road and called for rigorous checking to check drunk driving.
