SHILLONG: The CSWO has slammed the State PWD over the poor road condition in Meghalaya.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, the CSWO alleged that the PWD was least bothered about the deplorable road conditions in Meghalaya, despite funds worth crores being pumped into the department.
“This is clear cheating and neglect of duty by the authorities of this department, which also leads to corruption in connivance with the contractors, as there is no follow up by the engineers assigned to look after the roads,” the statement said.
“The bad roads also give a bad impression about the way development funds are being utilized.
“It is mandatory that the wear and tear of the road should be maintained by the contractor, yet RTI findings reveal that hardly any contractors are black listed or show-caused even when the conditions of the roads all over the State are pathetic,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said adding that this indicates that the engineers were not doing their job but “blindly issuing completion certificates”.
The CSWO added that it had earlier written to the Chief Engineer PWD (Roads) about the need to issue immediate direction to all engineers, sub divisional engineers (PWD Roads) to look into all bad roads and black list the erring contractors, but nothing has been done in this regard till date.
Kharshiing, who is also the convener of People’s Mission, urged the Chief Engineer (PWD) to act on such errant officers and post honest engineers who perform or else to face a PIL in the High Court for neglect of government duty, cheating and corruption.
