SHILLONG: The nuisance of public smoking and health hazards involved with passive smoking were discussed on the second day of the KHADC’s Summer Session here on Tuesday following a motion moved by HSPDP’s Mylliem MDC, Teilinia Thangkhiew. “There have been complaints by women about smoking in Iewduh in violation of Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules 2008 which prohibits smoking in public places,” Thangkhiew said.
Highlighting the health hazards of passive smoking, she urged the Executive Committee to direct the Hima Mylliem to take initiative to prohibit smoking in Iewduh.
“The District Council can generate revenue from the fines of Rs 200 imposed on anyone found violating the law,” she added. Replying to the motion, Hadrian Lyngdoh, EM in charge, market assured that the matter will be discussed with the Syiem of Hima Mylliem.
