SHILLONG: KHADC members have called for fencing of all forested areas under the jurisdiction of the KHADC to prevent alleged encroachment by residents.
The matter was raised by HSPDP MDC L.G. Nongsiej in the House on Wednesday, in reply to which EM in charge of Forests, Grace Mary Kharpuri, said the Lailad plantation in Ri-Bhoi is being fenced in the first phase.
“Eviction drives were conducted on June 1. Later we will come up with the fencing work.”
She also replied that there are 12 forest plantations of the KHADC – Langumshing plantation, Aradonga plantation and Noonmati plantation in West Khasi Hills; Lailad Umling plantation, Kyniong plantation, Sohlait plantation, among others. On being further queried about the funding for fencing the plantations, she said, “The funds are sourced from the 13th Finance Commission and tender was called in February, 2014.”
