Social Welfare dept accused of ‘embezzling’ Rs 35.07 crore

SHILLONG: Alleged anomalies in the disbursement of payments to self-help groups and women’s organizations by the department of Social Welfare have been alleged following claims that an amount of Rs 35.07 crore was not released to self-help groups and women’s organization.
In a statement issued here, the aggrieved parties who have been employed in the services of supplying the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) foodstuffs, condiments etc., have claimed that they have not received their rightful dues. The payments have not been received by the organizations for the last 4 quarters.
They stated that the department of Social Welfare is not serious enough to observe that the programme under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) of feeding the children which is the flagship programme of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development is laden with anomalies.
Further the aggrieved parties alleged that another programme – the Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG) Sabla have not been paid for 3 years and a quarter.
Blatantly accusing the government of lying, the aggrieved parties revealed that the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development had released the amount of Rs 35,07,13,000 and are questioning the unexplained ‘disappearance’ of the money.
