SHILLONG: Legendary musician and singer from Shillong, Lou Majaw has been selected for this year’s prestigious ‘Bhupen Hazarika Award’ of Sarhad for his outstanding contributions in the field of music.
Majaw is the lone musician from the entire north east, who has been selected by the selection committee of the Sarhad, which has been honouring persons from the region with this prestigious award since 2012.
“The award will be handed over to Majaw at a ceremony to be held in Pune in October,” the founder president of Sarhad, Sanjay Nahar, said in a statement on Friday.
The award is aimed at creating a strong bond between Maharashtra and the North East. It consists of Rs 51, 000, a memento and a certificate, the statement said.
Born on April 14, 1947 at Mawlai Phudmawri, Majaw’s first encounter with the guitar was in the year 1955 at the Sacred Heart Boys’ Boarding School.
He also formed bands which included Great Society, Meghalaya Love Project, The Fentones , Super Spund Factory etc.
Recipients of the award since 2012 include noted film director Jahnu Barua, actor Ratan Thiyam, journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap.
