Opposition gains strength in Nongpoh

Nongpoh: Unhappy with the outcome of a meeting with Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner C.P. Gotmare, members of the Nongpoh Town Committee and leaders of Umlyngkdait village on Tuesday announced that they will organise a public meeting to discuss the setting up of a weighbridge at Nongpoh.
The delegation comprising NTC chairman C.B. Syiem, and Umlyngkdait village headman S. Kharlyngdoh, and others, met the deputy commissioner, Transport Commissioner I.W. Ingty, Ri-Bhoi SP G.D. Kharwanlang and others and held discussions on the issue.
Emerging from the meeting, the delegation said they were not happy with the outcome of the meeting and also informed that the deputy commissioner had sought a week’s time to run the weighbridge on a trial basis so as to gauge its pros and cons.
The delegation further informed that the public meeting to be held at Umlyngkdait village on Thursday would be attended by all the headmen under Nongpoh, NGOs, Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi, Seng Longkmie and people of Nongpoh.
KSU joins bandwagon
Meanwhile, the group protesting against installation of the weighbridge at Nongpoh is growing stronger by the day with the KSU Nongpoh Circle now extending its support to the Nongpoh Town Committee.
The KSU Nongpoh Circle claimed that the weighbridge at Nongpoh would cause nuisance and obstruct the smooth flow of traffic on the National Highway, especially in the market area of Nongpoh.
“We are not against installation of the weighbridge. The government can install it in any suitable location outside Nongpoh,” the KSU said.
The KSU also requested the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to intervene alleging that the weighbridge will not only lead to traffic woes on the National Highway but will also damage the road.
“We pay tax at the tollgate to travel smoothly without any traffic congestion; the daily travelers on the National Highway should not suffer the consequences arising out of the weighbridge as had been experienced with Umling weighbridge in   the past,” the Union stated.
The organisation also asked the Transport department to immediately stop the construction work and warned that the KSU would not be responsible for any untoward incident that might arise in the future.
