SHILLONG: The State Chief Secretary KS Kropha has made it clear that the two-laning of Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Mawthabah road in South West Khasi Hills has nothing to do with uranium mining.
Kropha told reporters on Wednesday that he had a meeting at his office chamber in June this year with officials of Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highway who had categorically said that that the construction of the road has nothing to do with uranium mining.
According to Kropha, after the meeting, he had advised the officials of the Central ministry to write to KHADC making its stand clear on the issue.
Though KHADC was requested to attend the meeting, no one from the Council was present.
To a query on the stand of the government, Kropha said, “The state government has neither given any mining lease nor approved mining of uranium mining in the state”.
The 60 km Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Mawthaba two lane road project was proposed to be taken up at the cost of around Rs 470 crore as per phase “A” of the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in Northeast (SARDP-NE), under union ministry of road transport and highways.
