SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee on Two-Lane Road Nongstoin-Mawthabah has taken strong exception to KHADC CEM, PN Syiem’s statement that no-objection certificate cannot be issued for the two lane Wahkaji-Mawthabah road project, which according to some quarters is linked to uranium mining.
Expressing shock over the statement secretary JAC, Zandy Myrthong said that the project is being stalled by groups which are not native to the area under question.
It may be mentioned that during a meeting with the Managing Director of National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited in Delhi on Monday Syiem had clearly told the former that NOC cannot be issued for the Wahkaji-Mawthabah road project.
“This amounts to snatching away of the rights of the people who are left backward due to the absence of better road connectivity. We urge the leaders to work together for the welfare of the people,” he said.
Reiterating the demand for the implementation of the road project while saying no to uranium mining in the same breath Myrthong said, “The JAC demands the State government to organize a public hearing on the matter. We demand the NOC for the road project and not uranium mining. The road project has not linked to uranium mining.”
Expressing discontent with Syiem’s comments, Myrthong said the locals from South West Khasi Hills, who have been banking on the implementation of the road project, were treated like outsiders in the matter.
Myrthong asserted that the JAC will fight for the implementation of the road project.
