SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday reiterated its opposition to the proposed two lane road project from Nongstoin to Mawthabah stating that it is meant to facilitate uranium mining in the area.
In a statement to the press, HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said the Joint Action Committee of Social Organisations (JACSO), South West Khasi Hills and other anti-road organizations have written to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to clarify as to whether the road project is meant to facilitate uranium mining.
He questioned the rationale behind the move of the National Highway & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and Ricky Sohlang, president HANC, and chairman of Joint Action Committee on Two Lane, to prod the KHADC to issue an NOC for the road project. Kharjahrin said it a ploy between the Central and the State governments and is aimed at facilitating uranium mining.
