SHILLONG: The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals in East Khasi Hills District has cautioned against cruelty to animals ahead of Bakr-Eid on September 12.
The Deputy Commissioner has issued an advisory following a report that during transportation of animals, the Transport of Animals Rules is not complied with subjecting them to unnecessary cruelty and death. DC PS Dkhar has stated that the Act prohibits slaughter of pregnant animals with offspring less than three months old. Slaughtering of animals within the Municipal area is permissible only under the mandate of a recognized authority. He has further informed that slaughtering of animals other than Ovines, Caprines and Suillines (hog family), cows, poultry and fish, is not permissible under the Food Safety and Standards Act and Regulation.
“Any unscrupulous person carrying out illegal slaughtering will violate the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, local Municipal Acts and Rules, Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, Amendment Rules 2001, Slaughter House Rules 2001, Municipal Laws and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India,” the DC said.
