Tenancy Bill to get Select panel nod soon

SHILLONG: The Select Committee, which is going through the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016, is likely to draw up holistic recommendations on the Bill in its next sitting on September 7.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday after holding a meeting of the Select Committee, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the Committee had detailed discussions on every clause of the Bill, keeping in mind its over-all objectives.
According to Sangma, the Select Committee has almost completed a thorough study of the Bill and he is optimistic that the Committee would give a final seal on the recommendations on September 7 before finally presenting the report in the upcoming autumn session of the Assembly beginning from September 9.
The chief minister further stated that during the meeting, a number of recommendations were made by the other members of the Committee on the critical components of the Bill to make the
enforcement more effective.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Assembly had in March this year referred the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016, to the Select Committee. Under the Residents Safety and Security Bill, all persons residing in rented houses in the State will have to furnish requisite documents to the local police station or to local authorities for verification.
The Act, however, will not apply to any house or rental units owned by the Centre or the State government or a government undertaking or any other government establishments.
The Select Committee comprises legislators Metbah Lyngdoh, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, John Leslee K. Sangma, Jemino Mawthoh, Hopeful Bamon, Cherak Momin, Saleng A. Sangma, Embhahlang Syiemlieh and Nihim D. Shira.
