NONGSTOIN: The residents of Siejlieh village near here in West Khasi Hills have raised their voices against a proposal to set up a BSF camp in the area.
The villagers on Saturday claimed that they have learnt of the reported move of the BSF to set up a camp at Mawiaban in Siejlieh. Nongstoin MLA Diosstarness Jyndiang and MDC L.G Nongsiej are also supporting them.
In an emergency meeting, Sordar of Siejlieh village S.K Thongni said the people of the area condemn the move to “forcibly set up a camp” without seeking permission from the local Dorbar Shnong. Local MLA Jyndiang also slammed the BSF for allegedly trying to bypass the headman of Siejlieh village. “They (the BSF) cannot set up a camp in the area without the permission of the local headman,” Jyndiang said urging the district administration to ensure that the camp is set up in some border area.
Nongsiej seconded the local MLA and said setting up a camp in such a peaceful area made no sense and that the locals would not benefit from it. “Rather they will be subjected to a feeling of insecurity.”
The villagers decided to meet the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police on Monday to ascertain the facts relating to the matter.
