SHILLONG: The State cabinet, which discussed the date for holding by-polls to six KHADC and one JHADC seats, has decided to wait for the notification from Governor V. Shanmuganathan.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, District Council Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong said the Governor had raised a few observations after the last cabinet meeting had fixed the schedule of election that was forwarded to him for approval.
“In today’s cabinet meeting, we have gone through the observations of the Governor and the cabinet decided to send its recommendations on holding polls again to the Governor for his approval,” Tynsong said.
He, however, indicated that the government wants to complete the entire poll process by December.
According to sources, the queries of the Governor were related to the order of the High Court on September 1 that rejected the December 13 schedule fixed by the State government.
Sources added that in view of the Court order, the Governor desired that the State government may re-examine the date that was earlier fixed.
However, the sources added that the government will file an affidavit in the High Court of Meghalaya to allow conduct of the polls on December 13.
Sources said the affidavit will include reasons – like festivals and examinations – that are seen as hindrance to holding of the by-polls before December.
