Panel suggests changes in Residents Safety Bill

SHILLONG: The Select Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly constituted to look into the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016, has finally completed its exercise.
Speaking to media persons after the final meeting of the Committee here on Wednesday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the panel has finalised the amendments in the Bill for consideration by the Assembly.
“The Select Committee will look at the final recommendation on the first day of the session immediately after the House rises and we will propose to place the recommendations before the House for its consideration,” Sangma said.
Asserting that the panel did its job well, the Chief Minister said the Select Committee met on three occasions before finalising its recommendations on the entire bill.
The Committee in its previous meeting had detailed discussions on every clause of the Bill, keeping in mind its overall objectives, besides a number of recommendations were made by other members of the Committee on the critical components of the Bill to make the enforcement more effective.
It may be mentioned that the State Assembly had in March this year referred the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016, to the Select Committee. Under the Bill, all residents living in rented houses will have to furnish requisite documents to the local police station or local authorities for verification.
The Select Committee comprises legislators Metbah Lyngdoh, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, John Leslee K. Sangma, Jemino Mawthoh, Hopeful Bamon, Cherak Momin, Saleng A. Sangma, Embhahlang Syiemlieh and Nihim D. Shira.
