SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Monday admitted that private persons can initiate steps with legal sanction to prosecute IAS, MCS, MPS and other high ranking officials involved in corruption cases.
Though initially the reply of the chief minister to a question by Diosstarness Jyndiang (HSPDP) on the matter was in the negative, Sangma later admitted that individuals can bring charges against the officers based on the provisions of law.
Jyndiang pointed that as per a Supreme Court ruling, private persons can lodge complaints against corrupt officers which the government should take into account.
Raising a supplementary question, Ardent Basaiawmoit (HSPDP) said that the “Modi government” has entrusted private persons to seek prosecution against officers.
The Chief Minister said that the state government has come up with the Lokayukta Act which will enable officers to file their returns which will ensure transparency. “There will be a robust mechanism and we are in the process of making the Lokayukta Act fully operational,” Sangma said.
