SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM) has sought the intervention of the Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar in fulfilling its long-pending demand for provincialisation of teachers’ services.
In a memorandum submitted to Javadekar on Tuesday, JACATAM chairman E.D Nongsiang said the matter of provincialisation was taken up with the State Government, but it has expressed its inability to do so owing to financial crisis. The committee asked the Union Minister to extend financial grants for the purpose.
JACATAM also urged the Minister to impress upon the State Government the need for an education policy. Meghalaya does not have a policy even 44 years after its formation.
It further said the State has negligible number of technical, medical and vocational institutes.
“Only a few who are economically sound can go outside the State for such courses as barring NEIGRIHMS, there is no other medical college in Meghalaya. It also lacks engineering and agriculture colleges,” Nongsiang said.
