Three held for smuggling agar wood

SHILLONG:  South West Khasi Hills police managed to foil the attempt of smugglers from Assam who came to Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills to smuggle agar wood.
According to police, three persons travelling in a Mahindra Scorpio (AS 01 BL 1962) were caught with 130 kg of agar wood at Mawkyrwat while their vehicle was being checked. Jakir Hussain (driver), Nadir  Hussain , and  Fariz Uddin, all from Hojai, Assam will be produced before forest officials on Monday while the vehicle along with the smuggled wood were seized.
When contacted, Herbert G. Lyngdoh, SP South West Khasi Hills said that the arrested people were moving suspiciously and consequently were arrested in Nonghyllem at 4:45 AM. “We will hand them over to the forest officials. The arrested persons did not have proper documents with them and moreover, they were carrying 130 kilos of agar wood which is an endangered species,” he said, added that interrogations are on.
