Natl seminar on crime against tribal women
Shillong: The Department of Political Science, Nongstoin College, organized a two-day national seminar on ‘Crime against Tribal Women’ at the College from Sept 27- 28. Addressing the inaugural function, chief guest and IPR Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “Often crime against women is linked with illiteracy and poverty although there are many factors.” She urged the gathering to reach out to the victims who are in distress and in need of help and support. Amongst others who spoke on the occasion were local MLA D. Jyndiang, DC S. Kharlyngdoh and Principal, Nongstoin College, B.K. Laitphlang. Resource persons for the seminar included Dr. Neelam Borwankar, Associate Professor, Deshbandhu College, New Delhi, and Prof. S. Patil, Director, Lifelong and Extension Education, Mumbai University.
Visitors welcomed at airport on tourism day
SHILLONG: India Tourism, Shillong, celebrated World Tourism Day 2016 in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Shillong Airport in Umroi on Tuesday. The airport was adorned with flowers, banners, balloons and passengers were given a rousing welcome with traditional shawls and sweets. City-based hoteliers and travel agents were also involved in celebration of World Tourism Day. To mark the occasion, the India Tourism office in Police Bazar was also decorated with flowers.
Weighbridge notified
SHILLONG: Acting on the order of the National Green Tribunal, the Transport Department has notified the Amsarin weighbridge near Sohkha model village on the Jowai-Dawki Road in West Jaintia Hills District to issue certificates to all goods laden vehicles that pass through the weighbridge for one year and until further orders.
AIR musical evening
SHILLONG: The Music lovers of Shillong were in for a treat at the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan, one of India’s biggest classical music extravaganzas held here and at 24 cities across the country recently. The event was more special in Shillong for it was the first time that western music featured in the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan. In Shillong western classical violinist Prosanto C Dutt accompanied by his wife Malabika Dutt on digital piano enthralled the audience. Soulmate and Lou Majaw & Friends also performed on the occasion.
Training cum mock drill on earthquake
Shillong: The District Disaster Management Authority, Mawkyrwat recently organized a training-cum-mock drill on search and rescue and first aid followed by a mock drill on earthquake at the Presbyterian Secondary School at Saitsnad in South West Khasi Hills. The programme was organised under the disaster management plan. Training on search and rescue operations and first aid treatment to the wounded and the like was imparted to the students by D.L. Kharkongor, Assistant District Project Officer, District Disaster Management Authority, Mawkyrwat and L. Syiemlieh, Assistant Deputy Controller, Civil Defence & Home Guards.
Rabies Day observed
SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Unit, Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association observed the World Rabies Day on Wednesday under the global theme, ‘Rabies: Educate: Vaccinate: Eliminate’. A free anti-rabies vaccination camp was organized by the unit in collaboration with the office of the CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board on the office premises of the District A.H. & Veterinary Campus. 85 pets and stray dogs were vaccinated.
