SHILLONG: The construction of the International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture at New Shillong Township has made only 19% progress so far. Officials, however, sounded optimistic that the project will be completed on time. “The construction was slow during summer due to rain,” sources said. The scheduled deadline for completion of the project  is December 2017.
It has been learnt that the centre will be on a par with similar institutes across the globe and aims at making Shillong the hub of performing arts, especially music, in the North East.
The Urban Affairs department had parted with around 42 acres of land for the project which would be of international standard with state-of-the-art facilities.
“The proposed project will enhance the overall experience and create opportunities for greater exposure of local talent which will benefit the region in a number of ways,” official sources said.
The project is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore that has already been sanctioned.
