NF Railway starts DEMU train service in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is to introduce Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train services on the Dibrugarh-Tinsukia-Ledo-Dangri section from October 8.
The Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) is a special train and very beneficial for transportation of local passengers.
It is being introduced for the first time in Assam and the whole of Northeast, said NFR Chief Public relation officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma on Friday.
A multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines, the DEMU requires no separate engine or locomotive, as they are incorporated into one of the carriages.
“A diesel engine powers an alternator and subsequently feeds the electric motors. Here every passenger-carrying coach has its own source of motive power fitted below the coach,” said Sharma.
This enables the DEMU train to have quick acceleration and retardation, making it ideal to ply as a shuttle between stations located at short distances.
Sharma further added that the local passenger services are ideally suited for DEMU for its inherent advantages.
“As the DEMU train can ply in both directions, it does not require any cumbersome reversal at terminal stations. The coaches are also better adopted with more seating capacity. There will be total eight coaches in the DEMU train,” Sharma stated.
A total number of 12 DEMU trains will run daily on the stretch between Dibrugarh to Dangri section, he added. (IANS)
