MPCC treads cautiously before taking decision

SHILLONG: The axe may fall on KHADC CEM P.N Syiem for his stand against the government and also for making efforts to campaign against the candidates of the Congress in the upcoming by-polls to seven vacant council seats.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee had a series of meeting in the last few days to discuss the stand of Syiem.
Sources said some ministers had apprised the party of their fears that if the candidates for by-polls in their constituencies do not win, it may affect their prospects in the 2018 Assembly polls, and hence wanted the MPPC to reign in the KHADC chief.
Sources said MPCC had received reports that Syiem has been campaigning against the party candidates that will go in favour of the non-Congress parties in the upcoming by-election.
The reports from MPCC against Syiem had also gone to the AICC which, however, has left it to the wisdom of the State leadership to take action against Syiem.
According to sources, if action is taken against Syiem, there will be realignment in the KHADC in case of his removal as CEM.
However, MPCC is adopting a cautious approach as it does not want to see any setback to the party if any action is taken against Syiem, who is now termed as a hero even by some Congress leaders for his bold stand against the dual posts Act brought by the State government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma.
In fact, it was the dual posts Act brought hurriedly by the government that forced the by-election to the seven council seats.
