Situation continues to be tense after teen’s death in group clash

TURA: The simmering tension in Tura over the death of a teenage boy in a group clash last week escalated on Monday evening after unidentified miscreants made an arson attack on a house in Rishipara locality by allegedly hurling a petrol bomb from a hill top in Mondoltilla.
As darkness fell a group of young boys descended on Mondoltilla locality of Hawakhana, located just above Rishipara locality where the clash occurred last Thursday, and began hurling stones and missiles below.
A bottle containing inflammable liquid, suspected to be a petrol bomb, was also lobbed onto the houses located below. The device exploded causing partial damage to the surroundings of one of the houses below.
A large posse of police was rushed to the spot as news of the attack spread and by the time the security forces arrived on the scene the miscreants had beaten a hasty retreat.
Ever since the clash at Rishipara, security had been tight throughout the locality and its adjoining areas with round the clock patrolling.
Following the arson attack nervous residents questioned the security apparatus in place given that the audacious attack took place in the early hours of the evening.
However, West Garo Hills district police chief Mukesh Kr Singh clarified that security has been constant at both Rishipara and Reserve Gittim localities of the town and teams have been placed at all vulnerable locations of the town.
“Situation is sensitive but under control. We have both BSF and CRPF teams on patrol alongside state police personnel,” informed the police chief.
He also expressed alarm over the rumour mongering taking place on social media and other media outlets.
“A lot of false information is being given out by vested interest groups to stoke the flames of hatred. I urge upon the public to be wary of rumours in the interest of peace,” said police chief Mukesh Kr Singh.
Meanwhile, the district SP has informed that an enquiry has been ordered over allegations made against a police sub-inspector (SI) that he had manhandled two teens who were brought to the police station along with Late Sengat Sangma on the night of the clash in Rishipara.
“Since complaints have been made  against a police officer an enquiry has been ordered by the department. The investigation will be conducted by Additional SP Vivekananda Singh,” informed Mukesh Singh.
