AMPATI: The Agriculture Department organised an awareness-cum-training programme on adaptive and supplementary agricultural practices in the wake of climatic changes here on Monday on the occasion of World Food Day. Stalls at the venue of the programe, which was on the theme ‘Climate is changing, food and agriculture must too’, were offering 50 percent discount on agriculture equipment, seeds, organic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides to farmers.
Additional Deputy Commissioner M.T Sangma, who was the chief guest of the programme, said food security can be achieved in the region, which is endowed with fertile land, “if the land is utilised properly for agriculture”. “However, climatic change is a major concern and farmers will have to incorporate adaptive measures in their traditional agricultural practices,” Sangma added.
Stressing on plantation of more saplings to increase green cover as well as precipitation, Sangma said within a decade or two, farmers will have to increase food production to meet the demand of the growing population. “With progressive agricultural practices, it is possible to make the region the rice bowl of the State if not the district,” Sangma added.
Earlier, District Agricultural Officer A.G Momin elaborated on climatic change and its impact on agricultural practices. Among others who spoke at the occasion were District Horticulture Officer V. Marak, SDAO B. Ch Momin and a participating farmer.
