Council by-polls

SHILLONG: Announcement of new schemes by the legislators under the seven Council constituencies is barred from November 21 when the model code of conduct will come into force for the by polls.
The district council affairs minister Prestone Tynsong said that the government cannot launch new schemes for KHADC-JHADC constituencies which will go to the polls on December 13.
“The model code of conduct for the KHADC and JHADC bye-election will come into effect  from November 21 only in the respective constituencies of Nongspung-Sohiong, Laban-Mawprem, Nongkrem, Rambrai-Jyrngam, Mairang-Nongkhlaw, Mawthadraishan and Amlarem and not other areas”, Tynsong said.
The Deputy Commissioners of East, West and Jaintia Hills will be the returning officers for the polls.
When asked about sensitive areas in the state, he said, “We are yet to receive information on sensitive areas.”
Stating that more people of Mairang and Mawthadraishan should exercise their right to vote, he said, “There is a demand for setting up more polling stations in these areas. The government wants more people to come out and vote.”
Replying to a query about the Congress’ expected performance in the bye-election slated to be held on December 13 and whether P.N. Syiem’s suspension would have any impact on the party, he said, “We expect to win all the 7 seats and the suspension of Syiem will not make any difference.”
