SHILLONG: The State NIC is in the process of configuring an online portal where people can file their RTIs.
An official from NIC said the centre has a software and now it is being configured online, adding that it will take around one or two months to make the portal functional.
The move will be of great help for the people who want to file RTI as it will save them from necessary running around from one office to the other for filing an RTI.
Earlier, many activists in the State who had used RTI as a tool to unearth several scams felt that the government should make the process online along with the usual practice of submitting RTIs before the Public Information Officer.
According to officials, NIC can also think of developing an app that will enable people to file RTIs from their mobile phones.
But the initiative can be taken up only after the State Government’s nod.
It may be mentioned that the Right to Information Act, 2005, mandates timely response to citizens’ requests for government information and the tool has been effectively used by NGOs and individuals in Meghalaya to bring several shortcomings and scams in the public domain.
