SHILLONG: Illegal sale of India-made foreign liquor (IMFL) at Rongrem market in West Garo Hills has increased and no action is being taken by authorities concerned, the regional unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has alleged. GSU Rongram has said the Excise Department and its district office have become “mute spectators” as black marketeers brazenly continue their illegal business that has increased in volume in the last few years. “We have tried to check the menace time and again but with no result. When there are reports about seizure of illegal alcohol in other parts of the State, the business is Rongram is only flourishing. IMFL is sold openly but no action is being taken. As the excise permits only one carton of IMFL to a buyer then how this black marketers are getting hold of large quantities of alcohol and why is it not being checked? ” said the GSU statement. “We urge the Excise Department and other authorities concerned to look into the matter and curb the menace,” the statement added.
