Hyderabad: Apparently devoid of resources to hire a vehicle for shifting his wife’s body to his native place, a middle-aged beggar here carried her corpse on a cart for over 60 kms, but lost his way and reached Vikarabad town instead of his destination in Medak district.
Kavitha and Ramulu, both leprosy patients, eked out a living by begging at Langer Houz here. Kavitha (aged around 45 years) died on the night of November 4 near Lingampally railway station due to ill health.
Ramulu, a native of Manoor mandal in Medak district, wanted to perform the last rites of his wife there.
“After his wife’s death, he decided to conduct her last rites in his native village and asked some local private carriers for shifting her body, who asked him Rs 5,000. “As he did not have any money with him to hire any vehicle, Ramulu put Kavitha’s body on a pushcart and walked all along till Vikarabad and reached here last afternoon,” Vikarabad Town Circle Inspector G Ravi said.
Police were alerted when some locals spotted Ramulu crying alongside his wife’s body, following which an ambulance was arranged to shift the body to Ramulu’s native, the inspector told PTI over phone.
Meanwhile, some local residents also collected money and gave it to Ramulu. Later, speaking to media, Ramulu said his wife died on Friday night after which he inquired with some autowallas to shift her body.
He said they asked a fare of Rs 5,000. Ramulu said as he did not have any money for arranging an ambulance either, he borrowed a small cart from someone and placed Kavitha’s body on it and pulled it all way long. (PTI)
