Gandhian feted by Assam Guv

GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit presented Amal Prova Das Sarvodaya Award-2016 to veteran Gandhian Dwarika Barua on the occasion of 105th birthday of late Amal Prova Das, on Saturday.
The award carries cash of Rs 25,000, a citation, an eri chadar, a sarai and a gamocha.
Speaking on the occasion, Purohit said Mahatma Gandhi was a towering personality who exemplified a unique co-existence of politics and principle, pleasure and conscience, knowledge and character, worship and sacrifice. Terming the burgeoning gap between these virtues as a sin, he called upon everybody to emulate the life of Gandhiji and strike a balance between these virtues to lead a life a complete man.
Citing corruption as an evil in the society, Purohit also lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for cracking down on corruption and corrupt officials to wipe out corruption.
Hailing Dwarika Barua, who is a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhabe, Purohit said Barua is a living example who has created a niche in the society by glorifying and championing the tenets of Gandhian Philosophy.
Synchronising with the occasion, Purohit also conferred Harekrishna Das award to Rupjyoti Sharma, a topper in surgery and Tilottoma Rai Choudhury memorial award to Vijaya Agarwala, Avinaba D N Singh and Abhiyan Syiemlleh the topper in obstetrics and gynecology in MBBS examination conducted by the Shankardeva University of health science.
