TURA: The muster roll employees in the PHE Department have demanded regularisation of jobs.
During a recent meeting with PHED Minister Prestone Tynsong and the department’s chief engineer in Shillong, a delegation of the All Garo Hills Muster Roll Workers Association said the workers’ jobs have not been upgraded either on merit or on ad hoc basis despite some of them working for more than 20 years. The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Minister that said the employees have to depend on daily wages for sustenance. Later, another copy of the same was submitted on November 13 to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in Tura.
“We also submitted the names of the MR employees who have been working in the department since 1975 to the chief engineer. He was shocked to find out the truth and has assured to look into the matter at the earliest,” the workers said.
Both Tynsong and Sangma have assured them to consider their demand, the delegation said.
Stating that the wages of labourers in different PHE sub-divisions in Garo Hills are yet to be enhanced as per the revised minimum wages of the Labour and Finance Department, the association urged the authorities concerned to act on the matter by December.
The association also sought monthly wages instead of the recent practice of paying every 3-4 months.
