Assam Regiment platinum jubilee
SHILLONG: The Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Subrata Saha, said on Wednesday that the Assam Regiment here is prepared to face any challenges.
Addressing the gathering at the 75 years celebrations of the regiment at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, Lt Gen. Saha said, “The regiment, like anybody else in the army, is prepared to respond to any challenge… The regiment has the history of rising up to any challenge, as it were,” he told reporters while replying to a query on whether the acrimonious situation in Jammu and Kashmir has been neutralised.
The Indian Army has been on its toes following the Uri attack on September 18 that claimed 17 soldiers. India retaliated with surgical strikes across the LOC killing two Pakistani soldiers and several terrorists. Talking about the glorious past of the Assam Regiment Lt Gen. Saha said, “Through the 75 years of the Assam Regiment, starting from World War II soon after it was raised, they (the soldiers) were deployed in the eastern front. It shows the warrior progress of the soldiers from the North East.”
Governor V. Shanmuganathan reminded the audience that the Assam Regiment was raised at Raj Bhavan. “The people along the borders are able to sleep peacefully because of the efforts of the Indian army… Army means discipline, courage and boldness.”
The Governor also unveiled a plaque on the occasion of the platinum jubilee celebrations. He released the third volume of a history book titled ‘The Indomitable Rhino Warriors of India’s North-East – History of the Assam Regiment’, in presence of Lt Gen. Saha and Lt Gen. J.R Mukherjee.
