SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women in collaboration with the Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University, is observing 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence with a series of events planned throughout the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in an effort to create mass awareness about the threats faced by people because of gender-based mindset.
The first event in this awareness programme was the street play performed by the students of BSW 3rd Semester at Smit market on Monday.
The programme started with a short speech by the Vice Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women Gamchi Marak who talked about the threats faced by women in society.
The students performed two street plays—one on an abusive husband and the effect it has on his child and wife and the second on peer pressure and how young women are taken advantage of by their peers.
Through the street play the students highlighted the various help lines that were available to women in need.
These include Iohlynti, Crisis Centre for Women, Meghalaya State Commission for Women etc.
