Women freedom fighters remembered in Imphal

Imphal: People of Manipur paid tributes and respect to women freedom fighters of Manipur who took part in the first Nupi Lal (First Women’s war) of 1904 and second Nupi Lal (Second Women’s war) .
Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh , Dy Chief Minister, Gaikhangam ,ministers, MLAs and others paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal memorial complex.
Protesting against the British Empire, women of Manipur rose to protest against oppressive policies.
Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi said we should remember the sacrifices and courage of the women who stood against the British Empire.
He appealed to all to take up democratic form of stir and not to disturb the common masses during any stir.
Deputy Chief Minister, Gaikhangam said women’s movement which were witnessed  in Manipur were not seen in other parts of the world . A  play on the historic event was also shown on the occasion.
As part of the observation a memorial race was also taken out in which about 1200 women took part.
The race was held in three categories , 35 to 45 , 46 to 58 and 58 to 59 .
There were some women who were above 80 years of age who took part in the observation. (UNI)
