Truckers assault home guards, vandalise office

SHILLONG: A group of around 500 people including truckers and public assaulted home guards and vandalised monitors at the weighbridge area and Transport department’s office at 13th Mile in Ri Bhoi.
Police said that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon when one LPG cylinder laden truck (AP-31T-7877) driven by Baldev Singh (50) accompanied by his son Palwandeep Singh (20), failed to enter the weighbridge.
Following this, one BSF personnel SI M.S Anthony and an unidentified BSF constable assaulted them.
On seeing this, a crowd consisting of truckers and public gathered at the place, entered the weighbridge area and Transport department’s office, assaulted home guard personnel on duty and also vandalised the office property.
The situation was brought under control when police personnel from Byrnihat outpost arrived at the scene.
