Alleged misuse of Swachh Bharat money

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Organisation against Corruption (MOC) alleged on Thursday that the Chief Engineer of the PHE Department favoured a few villages in Mawphlang block for distributing fund under the Swachh Bharat Mission and ignored due procedure.
In a statement to the press, Yowanne Shylla, MOC publicity secretary for Jowai, alleged that Chief Engineer S.K Sunn manipulated the Swachh Bharat scheme, which is being implemented by the PHE Department, and said “it is the biggest scam of 2016”.
The organisation has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CBI Director and the revenue enforcement director seeking an inquiry into the alleged scam.
Last week, three persons from Sohra, Umroi Madan and Jowai had accused Sunn of sanctioning huge funds under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for a few villages under Mawphlang constituency “for political gains” as he wished to contest the 2018 Assembly elections.
“The organisation has also urged the Prime Minister to investigate other schemes, especially in rural areas, implemented by the PHE department,” said Shylla and added CAG reports in the past had stated poor management.
“The organisation hopes that through our PM corruption in the PHE can be unearthed,” Shylla said.
