SHILLONG: After Tura MP Conrad Sangma and his late father P.A Sangma raised the matter, Rajya Sabha member from the State Wansuk Syiem now asked IIM-Shillong Director Prof. Amitabha De to take steps to install the statue of former President Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam, who breathed his last while delivering a lecture at the IIM.
In a letter addressed to De on Thursday, the Rajaya Sabha member said in order to give a befitting tribute, a memorial to Dr Kalam, should be set up at IIM-Shillong, to which he was a visiting faculty.
“1 also remind the worthy suggestion of Dr. G. John who had a very long association with him for a life-size statue at the entrance of IIM-Shillong to inculcate both the Kalam effect and Kalam spirit among the IIM fraternity, visitors and the public at large especially the people of Meghalaya,” Syiem said.
She also referred to the suggestion of Dr R.A Mashelker, former Director General of CSIR who had a very long association with Dr Kalam.
“Dr Mashelker was also of the same opinion as already conveyed sometime back,” she said.
Syiem asked the IIM Director to initiate steps to install a life-size statue of Dr A. P. J Abdul Kalam preferably in his famed teaching posture at the entrance of IIM-S without any delay.
According to Syiem, since the matter is very dear to her heart, she should be informed about the status and to follow-up the matter with MHRD, if needed.
