SHILLONG: The TUR on Tuesday urged the Mawhati Constituency Political Committee (MCPC) to refrain from attempting to whitewash the crime committed by legislator Julius Dorphang by terming it as a political conspiracy even as it reiterated its demand for resignation of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
In a statement issued here, TUR convener Angela Rangad said that a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by the MLA and he needs to be held accountable under the criminal justice system which is not in the hands of the Mawhati electorate.
“This criminal justice system which involves investigations by the police comes under the Home Minister and TUR is therefore amused at the politically insidious and ignorant statements made by the Sohiong Block Congress Committee that convened a meeting to further mislead people on the incidents of the Marvelene’s Inn trafficking case,” the TUR statement said.
According to Rangad, “the political agents of H D R Lyngdoh” in the same breath even appeared to be promising roads, bridges etc., as sops and inducements to further “fool the Sohiong electorate”.
“Lyngdoh may be the Sohiong MLA, but his powers as the Home Minister are one conferred in the name of all the people of Meghalaya and we therefore have every right to hold him accountable,” she said, and added that the demand for his resignation aims at ensuring an independent investigation into the trafficking case in which his family’s guest house has been named.  TUR also urged citizens to participate in the January 11 rally against the trafficking case at 11 am from Fire Brigade Ground to the Additional Secretariat Parking lot.
